You’re doing a great job!

You’re doing a great job!!! How many times do you hear this? Once a day? Twice a day? More?
How about if you never hear someone say ‘You’re doing a great job?’
In my personal experience I very rarely heard anyone say to me the words I was so desperate to hear, ‘ Lynn, you’re doing a great job!’
Even when I knew I had done a really good job, no-one would ever tell me I had. Which left me to feel unappreciated, unloved, and very disheartened. So for the next few days or maybe even weeks, I would dwell on the fact that no-one had told me I had done a great job.
So what did I do? I TRIED even harder the next time to ‘get it right’. Because if no-one had told me I had done a great job before then I must have done something wrong. Right?
No!! I had done nothing wrong. I had actually done a great job it’s just that nobody ever bothered to tell me.
I remember I would look at people with a longing in my eyes; I was trying to get their attention, I was trying to get them to notice me so that they would say, ‘ Lynn, you have done a great job!’
I remember working all over my Christmas holidays a few years ago to complete a Big Lottery funding bid; I spent hours doing the application because I knew it meant so much. People’s jobs were at stake, as was the future of the organisation and the people we supported. I worked my socks off!!
Great news!!! We got the funding!! The maximum amount at that time. I was ecstatic!!!
I was waiting for someone to say, ‘ Lynn, you did a great job!’ No-one ever did.
I was completely disheartened.
Whether you are waiting for your boss to say you are doing a great job, or whether you are waiting for your mum or dad to say you are doing a great job it doesn’t matter. Nothing changes how you feel when no-one says it.
My invitation to you today is this; Don’t wait for anyone else to tell you that you are doing a great job; tell yourself you are!!
Imagine a hand patting you on the back and say to yourself, ‘ You’re doing a great job.’
Continue to do this until it becomes a habit.
Notice how it feels when you do it.
You will start to feel good about yourself. Your self – worth will increase.
And if no-one has told you today that you’re doing a great job, I will.
You’re doing a great job!!!
