Don’t Allow Your Past to Dictate Your Future

Hi beautiful people,

Recently I was invited to be a judge for the SheInspires Awards 2023.

I have been a finalist for the past 6 years and last year I was chosen, along with eleven other women to be an Orange Champion.

Being invited to judge was indeed an honour.

For the past few days I have read through twelve of the finalists nominations who are all in the Global Agent for Change category and I was humbled to read the stories of some of these women and what they have overcome to get to where they are today and their remarkable achievements.

On Friday this week, I will have the honour of meeting all of these incredible women in person when they meet the judges via zoom.

Reading their heartwarming stories brought tears to my eyes, reading what they have overcome made me feel so emotional.

I have not met these women yet, yet I could feel their strength, courage, and determination to not only empower themselves, but to empower women and girls in their own communities and in the world.

These are women who have been sexually abused as a child, who have suffered in their own country because their country does not recognize women as having any rights; no rights to education, no rights to make their own choices in who they marry, no rights to end a violent marriage, no rights to speak up, no rights to challenge government.

Yet, despite all of this, these women are speaking up; they are challenging regimes, they are speaking up for the rights of women.

I felt empowered and inspired by reading their stories. Each story was different, and each story told the journey these women had to take to get to where they are today.

These women have NOT remained victims.

These women have stood up and put their stake in the ground and said, ‘This ends with me!!!’ ‘No more!!!’ ‘This needs to stop!!’

They are not allowing what happened to them to dictate their future, they are creating a better future, a brighter future, a future where women can thrive, a future where women can live freely making their own decisions. A future where women can feel safe in their own home.

I invite you to look back at your own story; are you using that story to stop you from doing or being what you want?

Or are you using your story to propel you to make change?

Changes for yourself and for future generations.

You always have a choice.

I can’t wait to meet these incredible women on Friday.

I know I will feel empowered and inspired. What an honour.
