Let’s Talk About Keeping Score

I’ve been thinking lately about something that quietly sneaks into our relationships — sometimes without us even noticing: keeping score.

You know what I mean…

“I texted first last time.”

“They didn’t remember my birthday.”

“I always do more around here.”

“I gave them everything — what did I get back?”

Keeping score is not love.

Not the kind of love that heals. Not the kind that transforms.

And certainly not the kind of love we want to give or receive.

When we keep score, we’re measuring — not loving.

We’re watching the tally, not holding space.

We’re in our heads, not in our hearts.

Keeping score destroys relationships. I’ve witnessed it.

And here’s the truth: Unconditional love doesn’t keep receipts. It simply gives because it wants to give — because it is love. It notices, appreciates, forgives, and releases.

What if instead of noticing what someone didn’t do…

you gently began noticing all the little things they did?

The soft “good morning”,

The way they saved you the last piece,

The way they try — even when they don’t always get it right.

The cup of tea in bed when you awake.

Sometimes love isn’t loud. Sometimes it whispers.

And when we stop keeping score, we can finally hear it.

So this week, I invite you to put down the mental scoreboard.

Let yourself love freely.

Let yourself receive fully.

And above all, let yourself be led by grace instead of grievance.

Because you, beautiful soul, were made to love unconditionally — starting with yourself.
